If a Thai girl is shy about telling you what her nickname means, she might have a good reason. Thai children are officially named by a Buddhist monk when they are at least 30 days old. In the meantime, their parents give them a nickname – and it usually sticks.
The Thais are a superstitious race. To protect their children from the envious attention of demons, Thai parents tend to choose nicknames that are unremarkable or downright unflattering. A pencil-thin Thai girl could live her whole life being called fatty (Uan).
Here are the meanings of the most common nicknames for Thai girls. Is your favourite Thai girl amongst them?
If not you can add your nickname to list and explanation too

Was this Kunde's first mail copied from somewhere ?
For me this is firts time, I heard that thai nick names have real meaning like fat, big, new, small, mouse ......
Meaning that when name was given, the monk gave it because of believed character of born child (30 days old) ?
I've heard names Ning, saifoon, keow ... that are not in your list, do you know what those mean, or is it just simple thai - english translation ?
Also I've been told that children was nick named by his/her mother when born ?? |

Yes, we believe that if the monk give a first name or nick name would be lucky to the people...At present we can give a name for child by ourselves if there is a book character.
Saifoon mean falling rain...
Keow " glass....
Ning it mean nothing... _________________ ...ดอกกระดังงาไทยไม่ลนไฟไม่หอม... |

Many get their nick names from what they look like when very young. Thinking of it, yes I know many girls named Ann who are stout. Nit, Lek, Noi, Toi, Tia would fit most of older Thais. Some of the ones called Dam and Daeng I have also been able to see where the names came from. Fanniest ones are couple of people I know called Uan and they are skinny as skinny can be, sarcasm? However I don't know where the name Geng can obviously come from. How can you see at that age if the child will be clever or skillful at later age. Nowadays new nick names from English language have also entered into the culture. These include Golf, Bank and Gift. _________________ http://bamboogrovestories.blogspot.com/
