SINGAPORE, Oct 19 (Reuters) - The Thai baht should extend recent gains against the dollar if the Bank of Thailand opts for a large rise in interest rates at a policy meeting on Wednesday, traders said.

Most analysts anticipate a quarter-point rise in the key 14-day repurchase rate, but some say there is a good chance of a bigger half-point move to contain inflation, which is running at a seven-year high.

"There is a higher chance of a 50-basis-point move than a 25-basis-point move," said Irene Cheung, head of Asian currency strategy at ABN AMRO in Singapore.

"It's a pretty good story for the baht as Thailand has indicated further tightening into 2006."

At 0200 GMT, the baht was at about 40.82 per dollar, little changed from late Asian trade on Tuesday. It has recovered more than three percent from two-year lows hit in July.

Expectations of higher interest rates in Thailand have helped the baht outperform most other Asian currencies in the face of this week's sharp sell-off in the yen.

But dealers said a modest rate increase on Wednesday is already priced into the market and there could be some profit-taking on the baht.

"If they move by 50, dollar/baht will go lower, but if it is a 25-basis-point move, dollar/baht will go higher," said one Bangkok trader.

Thailand's central bank has raised rates by two percentage points since August 2004. It tightened monetary policy by a larger-than-expected 50 basis points last month.
